Here at Dorset Disabled Canoe Unit (DDCU), we provide a kayaking and canoeing experience for our members in the beautiful area of Christchurch, Dorset. We provide a friendly, fun and safe environment for people of all abilities and ages to take part in the sport. DDCU is a relaxed club providing regular paddles and social events through the paddling season. Our famous BBQ's are especially well attended and provide great opportunities to meet new people and connect with our members. |
A unique club in the area, we have members with a range of abilities; some with physical disabilities, others with behavioural or developmental challenges and some who are experienced paddlers who just love to paddle. Our members are supported in a tailored way to meet their needs, whether paddling alongside our members in our of our tandem kayaks or providing coaching to help develop their paddling skills. |
Entirely run by a team of volunteers, our support team are passionate about kayaking and canoeing. They are trained in First Aid and Rescue Techniques and carry out other training, qualifications and coaching throughout the year, so that they can give the best support to our members. Our support team also bring first aid kits and tow lines to paddling sessions in order to be prepared for all situations. |
We partner with several other local clubs and often organise joint club paddles and social events, bringing variety to the season. We are also aware of our responsibilities to the local area and wildlife and paddles are planned to be considerate of this. We also often include litter picking along the rivers - often turning this into a competition where the team that collects the most litter getting the first cup of tea or coffee! |
